May is a great time to travel, with many great options. Spring has sprung in the Northern Hemisphere and it’s warming up. Although it’s cooler in the Southern Hemisphere there are some great places hitting its prime season. Here are the best of the best places to go with kids in May:

Best places to go in May with kids for Australia

For Aussies, it’s a bit too chilly in the South, so head to the Northern States. Winter is the best time to visit places like Queensland and the Territory. Whilst the nights are cooler, the days are splendid with blue skies and little rain.

Uluru, Northern Territory

After Prince William and Kate’s royal tour of the red centre, the spotlight is on Uluru. They actually went a tad earlier whilst it was still hot, though I’m sure there were  plenty of places to cool off at Longitude 131, accommodation fit for the likes of Oprah and the Royals. May is officially the start of the dry season and perfect weather. There’s little humidty, rain and heat, ideal for walks around the desert. It’s still warm but not overbearing with temps averaging 24 degrees celsius.

Highlights with kids

  • Catch a sunset at the rock and watch as it changes colours.
  • Take a walk around Uluru and witness the sounds of silence (between your childs cries and outbursts).
  • Go for many family friendly trails through the Olgas
  • Explore Aboriginal history and share dream time stories with your kids at the Cultural Center
  • Check out the stars above, truly spectacular.
  • See my post Uluru Dreaming with kids, for more information.

Brisbane, Queensland

Brisvegas is great in May. The storms season behind us. The beaches are less crowded yet it’s still warm enough to go for a swim, there isn’t that sticky humidity and swarms of mossies flying around.

Highlights with kids

  • Check out Southbank with great kids programs and events by QAGOMAState Library of QLDScience Center and QPAC.  An amazing exhibit called Falling Back to Earth finishes up on 11th May.
  • Go for a swim at Redcliffe or Southbank lagoon.
  • Check out Bribie Island for a great beach not far from Brisbane.
  • Take a free ferry along the river. – Head over to Tangalooma to feed the dolphins.
  • Break your trip up with a stay in Noosa.

Fraser Island, Queensland

Queensland and the northern states will be featured during the coming months. It’s the best time to go! May is great, the rains have cleared, there’s blue skies and the water is still warm. Mackenzie Lake has to be one of my most favorite places on Earth. I am a sucker for pure white sand and sky blue water. Extra points for awesomeness as it’s fresh water too, so the kids won’t sting their eyes.

Highlights with kids

  • Visit stunning Lake Makenzie and swim in the calm, clear, blue water. A perfect spot for kids to play.
  • Take the family on a drive along 75 Mile Beach. There are no sealed roads here.
  • Kids can paddle along Eli Creek a clear beautiful freshwater stream which gently flows out to the ocean.
  • Walk the sand dunes of Rainbow Gorge and perhaps spot a resident dingo.

The most romantic city in the world can also be super kid friendly. I have a great tip from a resident Parisian mummy friend to go in May, just before the summer holidays when Paris get’s packed with tourists.

Paris is beautiful in the spring with average temperatures in the 20’s, the picturesque streets are made more gorgeous with leafy green trees and pops of colour from spring flowers.

Highlights with kids

  • The Eiffel Tower is a must for any visitor to Paris, the kids would love the elevator going up and the views from the top.
  • Head to the Jardin du Luxembourg a large kid friendly playground complete with carousel, pony rides, puppet shows or float a toy boat in the basin.
  • Visit Euro Disney, where Mickey speaks french. – Take in a kid friendly museum, rather than the Lourve try the Natural History Museum or  The Cite des Enfants (childrens museum)
  • Float down the Siene at sunset with the kids and see the city of lights come alive. I can keep going on about things to do here, look out for my guest blogger an expert at all things Paris and kids.

Tuscany, Italy

  • Been to Brisbane once and we love it a lot. The sub-tropical weather is awesome! Hope to go back there again, and maybe I should include Fraser Island:).

    • Awesome! Glad you made it over here and hope you get back to Fraser, it’s ridiculously awesome. Thanks for popping by, just popping over to yours now xo.

    • Yes! Fraser Island is so beautiful. We’re heading back that way later this year. Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated xo

  • This is amazing. I’ve got to make more money so I can travel more. I homeschool and I feel the best education would be if we could travel the world with our children.

I dream of Paris. It is my number one MUST see city on my list of places to travel to!

Beautiful post and really helpful suggestions about what to do.
